If you are using PdaNet+, it’s crucial to be aware of the major changes introduced in Version 5.10 before updating. We have important instructions and information to ensure a smooth experience.

Windows Side Update

Before proceeding, make sure to update the Windows side of PdaNet+ from http://pdanet.co/install.

WiFi Hotspot Feature

The original WiFi Hotspot feature remains available in the separate FoxFi app. If you still require this feature, you can easily install it from the Play Store. Additionally, you can find the previous (4.19) version of PdaNet+ at http://pdanet.co/install/old.

New Location Permission

Android now requires a new location permission due to the WiFi scan API call. Make sure to grant this permission to ensure the proper functioning of PdaNet+.

Please note that without root access, there are certain technical limitations on what the app can do. While we strive to provide the most convenient solution for sharing your phone’s Internet connection, it may not be ideal or universal, especially for specific devices.

WiFi Direct Mode (New!)

PdaNet+ now introduces a brand-new “WiFi Direct Hotspot” feature compatible with all Android phones running Android 4.1 or later. This feature allows you to connect computers and tablets to your phone using WiFi. However, it may require you to either install our client app or configure a proxy based on your device. To activate “WiFi Direct Hotspot” in PdaNet+, tap the “Help!” button for detailed instructions.

• If your Windows computer does not detect the hotspot during pairing, follow these steps:
  1. Restart the hotspot on your phone.
  2. Click on “Show All WiFi Direct Hotspot” to verify if your adapter supports 5Ghz.

FoxFi/WiFi Hotspot Mode (The Old)

The original WiFi Hotspot feature remains available in the separate FoxFi app for those who still require it. Please note that it may not work on many newer phone models due to carrier updates. Even when it does work, your hotspot usage may still be subject to metering (refer to plan 2 below). WiFi Direct Hotspot could potentially resolve these issues. However, this new feature is not designed to support game devices, TVs, or TV streaming devices.

USB Mode

USB mode is compatible with all Android phones (except for some ZTE/Alcatel models) and allows connections from Windows or Mac. Additionally, there is a “WiFi Share” feature that can turn Windows into a WiFi Hotspot, enabling you to share PdaNet Internet with other devices.

Bluetooth Mode

You have the option to use Bluetooth mode to connect to Windows, although WiFi Direct mode is recommended for the best experience.

Do I Need This Software?

The PdaNet software has been in existence since the first Treo smartphone in 2003, with over 30 million downloads. However, whether you need it depends on your data plan. Most carriers offer four types of data plans:

1. Your data plan (limited or unlimited) does not allow you to enable the mobile hotspot feature on your phone, prompting you to contact your carrier.
2. Your data plan is unlimited, allowing you to turn on the mobile hotspot, but usage is “metered” against a cap (e.g., 5G/month), with potential speed throttling afterward. Please note that FoxFi cannot bypass this limitation.
3. Your data plan is unlimited, and you can enable the mobile hotspot with unlimited LTE usage and no throttling cap. While this plan is not common, some phone models may have loopholes to allow it.
4. Your data plan is limited, and it permits you to turn on the mobile hotspot from your phone, with hotspot usage counting against your data plan limit.

If your plan falls under category 1 or 2, PdaNet+ is essential. If your plan falls under category 3 or 4, PdaNet+ may not make a significant difference, but it won’t hurt to have it installed for convenience.

Free Edition of PdaNet+

The free edition of PdaNet+ includes timed usage limits but is otherwise identical to the full version.
